Common Eye Conditions & Diseases
Some eye conditions and diseases are more common than others. At your appointment, we’ll test your eyes and check for signs of the most common eye conditions. Click each title to learn more.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
The leading cause of severe vision loss over age 50 is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease that impairs your central vision. AMD comes from changes to your macula, the small centermost part of your retina in the back of your eye.
Cataracts
Most people will develop cataracts later in life. A cataract occurs when the crystalline lens of your eye becomes brittle and cloudy. Stronger prescriptions can accommodate the change in vision, but eventually, cataract surgery may be required.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Small blood vessels in your retina can be damaged by high blood sugar levels, causing diabetic retinopathy. Some treatments are available to stop the progression of the disease, but vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy is irreversible.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders typically caused by increased pressure inside the eye. It begins by damaging the outermost vision first and can go undetected without regular eye exams.
